Mana

From Cendaran Codex

Mana is a substance naturally found throughout the galaxy. It's widely known as the source of magic, but both Terrans and Cendarii use it as a power source as well. Though harmless in the small amounts normally found, it tends to cluster and flow in ways that can be very dangerous. It typically comes in three forms, with varying degrees of danger for each.

Mana gas, also sometimes called mana fog when it's in large amounts, is the most common form of mana. Invisible to the naked eye in the vast majority of circumstances, this is the type of mana that's commonly drawn on for magic. It's present everywhere, and causes no harm in most cases. However, some areas tend to 'gather' mana due to the way ley-lines are laid out or the way the geography traps it, which creates a visible 'fog,' a bluish mist that lingers in the air. It tends to make a chiming sound if one listens closely, and in this state it will gradually cause mana poisoning.

Commonly known as the most dangerous form of mana. When thick enough mana fog gathers, it tends to coalesce into a vibrant blue liquid, dripping down walls and off of ceilings. It pools in Old World basements and in old canals. It evaporates into a thick mana fog, and being anywhere near it is potentially fatal for a Terran. Cendarii, however, are known to enjoy baths in it.

Crystallized mana sometimes grows out of pools of liquid mana, if it's able to settle for long enough. Naturally crystallized mana is actually very safe to handle, and is very stable. It does eventually evaporate, but very slowly and at a rate that's typically safe to be around. Synthetic mana crystals are commonly used as batteries, both by Terrans and Cendarii, and these can be quite dangerous if mishandled due to being much higher density. Cendarii mana batteries, known as capacitors, are especially infamous for holding the explosive potential of a bomb if punctured.
